Wi-Fi computer networks are wireless local networks that allow you to connect to the Internet without the need to use cables.
A Wi-Fi wireless network uses radio technology that transmits data using electromagnetic waves. Wi-Fi networks are popular in homes, offices and public places such as cafes, hotels and airports, where users can use the Internet on their laptops, smartphones or tablets.
To use the WiFi network, we need a device with a built-in or external WiFi network card and access to a WiFi router that is connected to the Internet modem. The wifi router creates a radio signal that is distributed over a specific range. Each WiFi network has its own name (SSID) and password (WPA or WEP key), which are used to identify and protect the network against unwanted users. To connect to a Wi-Fi network, we must select its name from the list of available networks and enter the password.
A wireless wifi network has many advantages, such as mobility, convenience, saving time and money.
Thanks to WiFi networks, we can use the Internet anywhere and anytime, without cable restrictions. We also do not have to pay for additional telephone or television services if we have access to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi networks also allow you to easily share files and data between different devices on the network.
However, WiFi networks also have some disadvantages, such as instability, low speed, susceptibility to interference and security threats. Wi-Fi networks can be easily interfered with by other radio devices. Such as microwaves or cell phones, which can reduce signal quality and cause connection loss. Wi-Fi networks are also slower than wired networks because they have to share a frequency band among many users. In addition, Wi-Fi networks are vulnerable to attacks by hackers who can break into the network and steal our data or infect our devices with viruses.
Therefore, it is important to take care of the security of our wireless WiFi network and follow a few simple rules.
- You should change the default names and passwords of your network and router to unique ones that are difficult to guess.
- Please use the strongest encryption protocol available for your network card and router (preferably WPA2).
- Avoid connecting to unfamiliar or suspicious Wi-Fi networks in public places and disable automatic connection to open networks.
- We should regularly update the software of our devices and scan them with antivirus.
Wi-Fi computer networks are a great way to use the Internet wirelessly and mobile. However, we must remember their limitations and risks and properly protect our network and devices against threats.
