Google and Yahoo are two of the largest email platforms in the world
They handle billions of messages every day. To ensure the security and quality of their services, these companies constantly make changes to their policies regarding sending and receiving emails.
One such change is the introduction of a new sender authorization standard called BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification). BIMI aims to combat spam and phishing by displaying the sender's logo next to the message header.
To use BIMI, senders must meet several conditions, such as having a DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) certificate and compliance with the recipients' privacy policy.
BIMI is expected to be fully implemented by Google and Yahoo on February 1, 2024, which means email senders must prepare for it if they want to maintain trust and visibility of their messages.
Configure SPF and DKIM email authentication on your domain. To keep your emails secure and trustworthy, it's a good idea to configure SPF and DKIM authentication for your domain. SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a mechanism that allows you to specify which mail servers can send emails on behalf of a given domain. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) is a system that adds a digital signature to each email message that confirms its origin and integrity. Both of these solutions help prevent fake or spoofed emails that can be used for phishing, spam, or fraud.
Make sure your Google and Yahoo sending domains or IP addresses have valid DNS records
To ensure that domains or IP addresses sending email messages have valid forward and reverse DNS records, also called PTR records, there are several steps you need to take:
- You should check whether the domain or IP address has an A or AAAA record that points to the mail server.
- You should check if there is a PTR record for this IP address that points to the same domain.
- Please ensure that your A and PTR records match and do not contain any spelling errors or typos.
Forward and reverse DNS records are important to ensure the reliability and deliverability of email messages because some receiving servers may reject messages from senders without valid PTR records.
Configure DMARC email authentication for your sending domain
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) is an email authentication protocol that uses SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to verify email senders. Helps email recipients decide what to do with domain messages that fail SPF or DKIM testing. DMARC also provides reporting on authentication and compliance results.
To configure DMARC authentication for the sending domain, create a DNS TXT record for the domain with the _dmarc tag. This record contains information about the DMARC policy and reporting preferences for the domain.
Keep the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.3%
There are several steps you should take to keep spam levels low in Postmaster Tools.
- You should always only send emails to people who have agreed to receive them.
- Please ensure that emails are readable, attractive and consistent with the topic of your subscription.
- You should allow recipients to easily unsubscribe from your mailing list and remove inactive or invalid email addresses.
- Monitor your Postmaster Tools reports and respond to any deliverability, reputation or spam issues.
The optimal spam level in Postmaster Tools is less than 0.3%. If this threshold is exceeded, the visibility of emails in inboxes may be negatively impacted.
Unsubscribe with one click
To ensure that users can easily unsubscribe from subscribed messages, enable one-click unsubscribe and include a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the message. This link should be placed at the end of the message, on a separate line and highlighted in color or font. This way, users will be able to easily unsubscribe from unwanted messages and avoid spam.
