In the last 2 months, we have observed a significant increase in ransomware attacks - viruses that encrypt data on computers and servers. This attack almost always results in:
- downtime on IT systems. Paralysis after a ransomware attack usually affects servers with key company programs such as Optima, Symfonia, Enova, SAP, etc.
- lack of access to files in local and shared file folders - encrypted files cannot be opened.
- the above results in delays in timely delivery of products and services by your employees to your customers
To protect yourself against the above effects, you should act in two ways:
1.Reduce the chances of a ransomware attack:
- Use antivirus software on all computers and servers. However, it should be remembered that the latest viruses effectively bypass such protections, the "updated virus database" usually has significant delays in relation to the viruses that have been taking their toll in recent days.
- Ransomware usually attacks the user - through email, social networks and dangerous links spread across the Internet. It is worth using the services of an email provider that filters dangerous attachments and links very well - e.g. Office 365 . To make employees aware of the dangers that await them and the company on the Internet, the most effective way is to use training on safe work on a company computer.
2. Shorten the time to remove a failure caused by ransomware.
- Currently, the most effective solution may be a copy of the IT environment in the cloud. It contains a copy of all our services such as the remote desktop server and ERP program "downloadable in case of failure". Thanks to this, in the event of a failure, without installing systems or configuring them, both on the server side and on employees' computers, everything can be restored relatively quickly, e.g. within 1 day. Copies in the cloud have the following advantages: full automation and regularity of copies, information about effective and ineffective backups, separation of data in the cloud from data encrypted on the local side.
- To quickly restore files shared within the organization from end-user desktops and folders, it is worth using Onedrive - a cloud drive included in Office 365 .
